This was sent to me when I joined an online reading group. I know many here are avid readers and have children who are avid readers. I just liked what it has to say.

Research shows that avid readers:
• read better, write better and concentrate better
• are quicker to see subtleties
• have an easier time processing new information
• have a better chance for a successful, fulfilling adult life
• have many interests and do well in a wide variety of subjects
• develop an ability to understand how other people think and feel
• acquire the ability to sift information and to understand how
unrelated facts can fit into a whole
• tend to be more flexible in their thinking and more open to new
ideas
• handle personal problems better without their schoolwork or
business work being affected

Wow, that's interesting. Can't you see a job interview asking how many books for pleasure did you read in the last 2 months? At least in leadership positions it might give insight.

So does it say whether those outcomes are the cause or the effect? Do you get those skills from reading or do you read because you have those skills?

Excellent question acs. It didn't specifically say. I took the implication to be that you acquired those skills from reading rather than you read because you already have those skills.

That's what I was thinking as I read it, acs. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Interesting.....

I suspect it may be a both/and situation. People who like to read are probably drawn to it initially by virtue of a longer attention span, wide range of interests, etc, etc. Once they're reading, those traits are reinforced and developed further, strengthening them as the person goes along.

That's my theory, and it's probably just about worth the paper it's printed on! wink

Of course if message boards count, we are all quite brilliant indeed! grin
