Has anyone had any experience w/ language tutoring? I know a Harvard student (whose secondary concentration is Chinese) who can privately tutor this summer.

I'm wondering how much money that might cost - just a ballpark figure - for two children. He hasn't mentioned what his fees might be and I'd be interested in knowing what to expect. He tutors in-home.

It may depend on the expertise of the tutor, the subject and your geographical region.

I paid double the expected baby-sitting fee to high school students for periodic tutoring in the past, but would expect to pay more for a college student or an adult.

A good starting point may be to find out the average hourly rate for sought after piano/music teachers in your area which also varies by location.

I agree about it being similar to piano teachers... Around here it would be something like $25/half hour for private language tutoring or music lessons.

If you are interested in Chinese language, you may want to look for a Saturday Chinese school. We have several Chinese schools in our area. Many of them meet at local churches or community centers on Saturdays and accept children not of Chinese descent for their language classes. I am thinking about enrolling my dd in one this fall.

I've heard the same figures as Summer for private 1:1 tutoring. We have a number of Turkish kids at a local boarding school, and I was thinking about it for ds 11. But DH vetoed the idea, saying that it isn't a "useful" enough language. High school kids probably would have been cheap though, and I love the idea of learning from someone who speaks it as a first language.

I agree about a Saturday school if you want Mandarin. I am looking into it next year, after all the testing. I once looked into a Mandarin housekeeper and read quite a bit about everyone getting Mandarin nannies and what is retained. You need to use the language regularly.
