we are considering enrolling our highly to profoundly gifted daughter in a local progressive school (ala John Dewey model) - have folks heard of these? any experience. The school is not a "gifted school" - though some gifted children have been transferred there after unsatisfactory experiences in public school

I have not heard of this type of school, but is there any chance you can find out if there are other HG+ kids in the school? Maybe you could see if the principal can give you some names of parents to call to see how the school works for those kids. Obviously, not every gifted kid's experience will be the same, but that might be a starting place.

Hunter, a school for gifted, is gifted until 6th grade, then it goes to rote. They feel curriculum needs to be rote by 6th grade, even for gifted.

St. Ann's in Brooklyn, private school for gifted is progressive all the way through, no grades, tests, etc.

All progressives are not alike. Bank St. is a gifted school, Montessori is considered gifted and we have seen opinions about Montessori and gifted here.

Depends on the school, your child etc. In my most humble opinion.
