My son came home very pleased because he got 5 or 5 questions right on a mini-sample GeoBee in class on Friday. Does anyone have any experience with the GeoBee?
thanks,
Grinity

My younger daughter Yani was 3 time California state finalist (8th place best result).

The school competition usually starts right after winter break.

I don't know if you have following books or not. These are the standard equipments for all serious Geobee contestants.

Assuming that your son win the school competition which may not be easy by itself, he will be invited to a written test. If he does will on this test (individual state decides the cut-off line), he will be invited to state finals.

In state finals, there are 2-3 rounds to decide the winner. Only the winner moves on to national. Others get the bragging rights. It is my observation that those who do well in Geobee are usually very gifted (and hard working too).

Good luck.

Geography puzzles
I found the above site and thought I'd link it here. It has a lot of puzzles on-line and/or downloadable to learn countries, continents, states, provinces, capitols, landmarks, etc. It's a fun way to spend some time while learning geography.

I don't think our school participates in spelling bees, geography bees, or in-school math competitions. Of course sports competions are OK.

My DS says they have been doing mini GeoBee's in class the last few days but I don't know if there is anything more to it than that for them. He's enjoying it any way! Grinity is your DS doing anything further with GeoBee?

DS made it into the top 10 at his school. They'd been doing mini's for a while and he never mentioned it until Friday when he said he had to come to the finals tonight. Anyway, he did not make it past that round. What a relief! We had plans for the date that the state tournament would have been!

This weekend we had fun going to the National Geographic site and taking the daily quizes. We took turns taking the quiz as a family and laughed at our mistakes. We think we may make these quizes a family tradition.

Yea for your DS acs!!!!! I'm sorry/happy (since you're busy at the time of the tournament) he got eliminated - LOL!

I'll have to try the National Geographic site too. It sounds like fun.

I felt a little funny sending him off with a kiss and saying, "please have fun but don't win." ROLF.

Here is the site for the daily quiz http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/today.html

Thanks for the quiz site. My DS really enjoyed the mini GeoBee and my other DS and I have been doing the Highlights Which Way USA and the other series about different countries (can't remember the name now) so I think they will both really enjoy trying that. grin

DS got eliminated from his school's GeoBee. ((sad face)) I'm thinking about ordering the book to leave around for next year, but still not sure.
